The next-generation Mercedes-Benz SL will be the work of AMG. For the development of the new model, the implementation of the new platform, MSA (Modularen Sportwagen Architektur) is the key. This is an evolution of the platform MRA, which debuted with the current Mercedes C-Class, and the extensive use of aluminum and plastic reinforced with carbon fiber will reduce significantly the weight of the SL.

To save weight, also, the future SL could leave the metal roof and go back to a soft top, as in the S-Class cabrio. Since 2001, with the arrival of the fifth-generation of SL (type R230), the Mercedes SL is not formed part of a canopy of canvas.

AMG, which already had a solid reputation as a biker (this is one of the reasons why Daimler ended up buying AMG), has acquired experience in the complete development of vehicles. First with the SLS and especially with the current Mercedes-AMG GT. So, the old tuner is becoming more and more weight in the womb of Daimler.
